Project Reveal: The Durand Guest & Children’s Bathroom

Unveiling a Multi-Functional, Period -Appropriate, Child-Friendly, Art-filled, Contemporary &  Stylish Retreat.

Happy New Year! We hope it is a positive one for all of you. We here at CED are happy to be back in our Hamilton office, doing what we love, and are looking at 2024 with bright eyes and clear minds for an exciting year ahead of interior design projects.

With that in mind, what better way to start the new year, than by sharing a new bathroom design project completed by our firm. Welcome to the reveal of our multi-functional kids’ and guest bathroom! This one needed to do it all. A space where practicality met style, where functionality harmonized with elegance. It was designed to cater to the diverse needs of our bustling household while maintaining an air of sophistication for our not-so-infrequent guests.

The Vision

From the onset, the vision was clear: to craft a space that effortlessly accommodates both the energetic spirits of our little ones and the more refined tastes of visiting guests. Not that our visitors don’t love our children – but a bath surrounded by all manner of ducks and boats isn’t exactly relaxing. We sought a bathroom that could seamlessly transition between these two worlds – a space that’s practical yet exudes an air of sophistication and charm. Paramount to the vision was designing a bathroom that would fit into the character of a late 1800s Victorian home, while feeling fresh, modern and youthful at the same time.

Designing for Functionality

Practicality was at the forefront of our bathroom design process. With a young family in mind, we incorporated ample storage solutions cleverly disguised within the bathroom’s overall interior design. Custom-built cabinets house bath toys, while also providing terry-covered seating for wet little ones. Built-in marble ledges along the bathroom’s perimeter offer space for towels, toiletries, and children’s essentials, keeping the room tidy and organized.

Stylish yet Durable Materials

To achieve the perfect blend of style and durability, we opted for high-quality materials. We started with these showstopping graphic black and white marble mosaic tiles for the floors.  Their chic yet timeless pattern was an easy choice, providing both elegance and resilience. We opted to honed finish for safety.

The wainscotting, also crafted from a pale grey and taupe veined marble tile, in oriental white, marries practicality with sophistication, and lends a time-appropriate historical detail to the design.

Color Palette and Design Elements

A soothing yet playful color palette was carefully chosen to create a relaxing ambiance. Soft grey hues are accentuated by dynamic pops of black, and a happy sky blue injects a sense of cheerfulness into the space without overwhelming it. Decorative accents, such as the graphic artwork, add whimsy and lend a contemporary design element.

Versatile Fixtures and Amenities

Versatility was key when selecting fixtures and amenities. Dual sinks offer convenience for busy mornings, while incorporating both a bathtub and separate stand shower provides flexibility our children and accommodates guests’ preferences. The shower was house in floor to ceiling marble tile for a seamless look with the rest of the bathroom. Floor to ceiling glass walls and doors allow for sightlines and increase the sense of space.

We used brass for the finishes throughout, as it provided a warm contrast to the grey marble.  We opted for a polished antique brass finish rather than un-lacquered brass as we felt it would stand up better to daily use.

Final Flourish: Lighting and Accents

Carefully curated lighting fixtures illuminate the room, enhancing its warmth and ambiance. The antique brass lantern and sconce offer both functional illumination and maintain an elegant historic aesthetic. Decorative accents, in white and brass, like these stylish soap dispensers from West Elm, were a contemporary contrast to the historic finishes, and were chosen to be durable enough for children and sophisticated enough for adults.

The Big Reveal

And so it came together – our multi-functional bathroom designed to cater to the diverse needs of a dynamic household while maintaining a sense of sophistication and style. From its practical storage solutions ( i.e. hide away ALL THE TOYS!) to its elegant historically-driven design elements, our goal was to seamlessly blend functionality with aesthetics.
